DOUGLAS L. MEDIN (medin{at}northwestern.edu) is a professor of cognitive psychology at Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill. MEGAN BANG is an assistant professor of educational psychology at the University of Washington, Seattle, Wash. Abstract Culture plays a large but often unnoticeable role in what we teach and how we teach children. We are a country of immense diversity, but in classrooms the dominant European-American culture has become the language of learning.
