ELIZABETH BURNS is a library information specialist at W.W. Burrows Elementary School on Quantico Marine Base, Quantico, Va., and a doctoral candidate at Old Dominion University. Abstract Formative assessments, championed by the education research and teacher preparation community, offer teachers the ability to more accurately determine individual student interests and aptitudes and drive achievement. But in today’s high-stakes test focused environment little time exists for using them.
